Here is what the instructions say:
Step 1) Unscrew rope handle from black plastic cap. Set handles aside.
Step 2) Push rope down through end of cap so both metal crimp pieces are visible…
And despite being a reasonably smart and handy guy, I could not pass step 2.
Under the foam grip, the handle is sort of hourglass shaped. The design/production problem is that the crimp and rope are on the side of the hourglass closest to the handle, already crimped. The right side of the hourglass has a cap at the end, which is removable. However, it simply was not possible to get the rope and crimp through the narrow gap near the center of the handle so that it could be taken out through the uncapped hole and shortened. Gotta love Chinese manufacturing. Cheap cost. Cheap design.
Same problem; couldn’t get the clamp out of the handle. How do you mess up something as simple as a jump rope? Seriously, you’re better off finding a rope and hooking swivels and wood to the ends yourself. It’s that easy. I wish I did before buying this.
Before buying this product, I had read the most helpful reviews; so I wasn’t surprised to find it difficult to adjust. Apparently, you may receive your rope with the loose metal pieces already crimped, making it impossible to follow the directions of popping off the cap, pulling the rope, cutting it, etc. You’re going to need to pop out the ball bearing track with a long screw driver or pry it out somehow.
The reason why I only only rated this rope 3/5 is really because of its performance. The price cancels out the adjustment issue, so I’m not even considering that. If you’re looking for a REAL SPEED ROPE that can let you more easily do double unders repeatedly, or even some TRIPLE UNDERS this is NOT for you. The rope is simiply too light. I’m 6 feet tall, so I tried it at its full 10-ft length, and shortened it twice until I reached the “proper” length (both feet planted together on the rope until the handles pull up to somewhere between your armpits and collar bone). Unsurprisingly, at the proper length, the rope got lighter and was even harder to perform the double under. The triple under was impossible for me. Try the Everlast Deluxe Speed Rope…unfortunately, you’re going to need to be about 5′11″ or taller to fit that rope, or make a knot down each side. And it costs about twice as much. Other than that, the Valeo rope does light cardio just fine. Or maybe you’re a lot more athletic than me and find that you can do everything I cannot with this rope.
I haven’t needed to adjust mine, so adjustment hasn’t been a problem. I have purchased other leather jump ropes in the past and found that they quickly deteriorate and rot. This one is well made and durable.
I love this rope. It’s easily portable, which is nice for me because I travel a lot. Adjustment is fairly easy, in my opinion. There is some good info on here, if you have any trouble. If you’ve had other jumpropes though, this is nothing you can’t handle. As easy as any of them.
This is a great way to step up your interval training. Cheap, portable, and effective. What more could you ask for?
