This is a good buy for the price. Can I tell the difference between the Schwinn 460 and the $4000 Precor elliptical trainer at my local gym, sure, but the differences are tolerable, and not worth paying $3200 for.

Assembly was fairly easy, once I got the machine into the house. (It weighs 240 pounds – borrow a dollie.) The manual is easy to follow and the parts are easy to identify in the assembly manual and on the packaging containing all the screws, bolts, and washers. Everything lined up perfectly and was easy to bolt together. This is not an IKEA bookshelf.

I tried the elliptical machine out for the first time this morning. I like the display, and the operating system is easy to understand and use. The movement of the elliptical’s arms is smooth, but not so much for the footbeds. This may be where the difference between the Schwinn 460 and the $4000 Precor model comes in. The variable stride movement is not super smooth, but it suffices just fine for a piece of equipment with a MSRP of $1500. If you are looking for a machine to change your stride for you, this is not it. The machine will prompt you, e.g. “Short, fast strides,” but YOU vary your strides, not the machine. If you watch the video posted on this site, the gentleman doing the demo is varying the strides by his own will, the strides are not programmed by the machine. I don’t think I like this, but I may appreciate it in the future. As previously stated, I just received this trainer yesterday and tried it out once.

If you are tall, you may want to measure your ceilings, as this machine sets you higher off the ground than most ellipticals. I am 5′7″. I think anyone over 6″ should make sure they will have enough clearance at the uppermost height of the stride once on the machine. Measure your ceilings and contact Schwinn.

If you like a bit of cheerleading during your workout, you may like the “Keep it up!” and “Great workout!” messages of encouragement that appear on the console. The machine will also remind you to remain hydrated. The workout I had this morning was great, and I feel I made an excellent purchase. If you don’t have $4000 to blow on a professional-grade elliptical, my guess is that this is the closest you can get to pro-grade on a lower budget.

I ordered this elliptical January 12, 2010. Received it promptly and put it together. One of the sides was making a grinding noise so I called Schwinn fitness (nautilus) and they said no problem we will send you a new roller. I get the new roller in a few weeks and put it in only for it not to fix the problem. I am outside the 30 day return period now, (my first big mistake was to not immediately return this item to Amazon). They say it might be the cam assembly and that possible can fix my problem, but it is on back order so I will get it in a few weeks. I wait a month, still no cam. I call Schwinn (nautilus) again and they say its on back order and I should have it in a few weeks. Today (May 25, 2010) I call Amazon.com and they call Schwinn (nautilus) and are told that the product is on back order, but should ship out in a few weeks. Amazon will do nothing to solve this. Nautilus has been giving me the run-around for the past 5+ months. I’ve lost $900 because all i have is a 200 some pound chunk of metal sitting here and no one will do anything.

I read the reviews about this elliptical here as well as other sites. I will say that I was almost scared off by some of things that the detractors were saying. I ‘ll definitely say having a Schwinn Rep cruising the amazon boards and providing info and commenting on feedback made the difference. I hope and pray nothing goes wrong with my 460, but if it does I’ve been given the confidence that if I can’t fix it, Schwinn will. I received this machine today and assembly went pretty smooth except for one or two rough spots in fitting some of front supports together with the bottom brace of the console because of the alignment of the holes plus the powdercoating.(It might pay to have a rat tail file handy just to take some of the powder coating off the inside edges of the holes if need be). The rest came together like a dream and only took about 85 minutes. I agree with the poster that said to use your own tools.

Once I got it together, it ran pretty quietly and feels really solid. To my surprise, I didn’t experience any wobble or feelings of instability at all.. which I was almost certain I would after looking at the narrow footprint of the 460’s tail end. I’m fairly heavy and was able to stride with my arms swinging (as if I were jogging)and never felt the unit rock or tip or even rumble. I’m no elliptical specialist nor am I a gym rat, so I don’t know what the units in the gyms are like… so I don’t really have background to agree or disagree with the users that complain that they’re not getting a workout. I felt a burn in my quads after being on the 460 for about 10 minutes.

The one thing I did notice about this unit is, that with the variable stride, its up to you to control the machine and not let it control you. If you want a bigger stride, you have to make one then get and keep your rhythm going (the swinging handles will help you a lot in this respect and keep the motion from getting jerky). If you don’t consciously make an effort for a larger stride, you’ll wind up not feeling anything and you’ll look down to find yourself doing a tiny stride at double or triple the pace, out of desperation.

My 80 yr old grandmother was able to get on it (with a little help and support from me– The unit is a little tall) and was able to get a little stride going without my assistance. I’m pretty happy with this purchase. I’ll wait 3 weeks and see if I hear that squeak from the right side that people have been talking about…

With free shipping, the box arrived in 10 days. The delivery was confirmed ahead and the box ended in my garage. The unpacking took longer than you would think, but the result was the product without a single scratch. It took me just 2 hours to put it together, instructions were easy to follow.

After a couple of weeks of use, I got over 6000 and my wife over 2500 calories on it, and we both love it. Smooth and quiet stride and easy setup. Variable stride is really great, you just do the stride you want to do and even each leg can do different length. Your body is telling the machine the stride length not other way round. I actually realized that I do a bit longer strides with my right leg and I do not feel lower back pain that I felt on similar machines in the gym.

The only low side is the heart rate monitor. Instead of usual 5-10 seconds, it takes exactly 1 minute to get the rate. When it looses signal, it will go down to 72 BPM and take 1 minute to get to your heart rate. It does not matter whether you are using the strap or the handles to do the measurement, which makes the handle measurement very impractical.

As in my title, I think this is almost perfect machine and I would recommend it to anybody who wants perfect cardio exercise in a privacy of their home. Very high quality and well worth the money.
