A few months ago, we purchased the Schwinn 230 recumbent exercise bike. It took us 4 1/2 hours to assemble it, which I expected. If you pay close attention to the instructions, assembly is satisfactory. But, the heart monitor has never worked — therein lies the dissatisfaction. After having written Schwinn three times and sending two emails regarding this problem, there has been no response whatsoever. So, if you purchase the bike, hope it comes in complete working order, because the company will offer no assistance or resolution.
The “new” Schwinn 230 came 9 days after I ordered it. I thought it was strange that two of the plastic bags were tied instead of sealed at the factory and most of the bags were just slipped over the parts instead of sealed on both ends. I think this box had already been opened once before, found defective, returned, and then Amazon shipped it back out as “new.”
As I began to assemble the bike, I saw that the seat bottom was missing. I called Amazon and they said they would ship me a new bike and I could send back the old one. Now, this package weighs over 100 pounds and I weigh only 120 lbs and had a heck of a time getting it into my house by myself. I told them that that was not an option to please send me the part, the seat. They said that I could get the part from a local business and they would reimburse me up to $50. I can’t even find the part on the internet and Schwinn won’t be open until Monday. I’m beginning to have my doubts that I can find the part. I am very frustrated!!!
You can’t go wrong with model 230! At the time I ordered my bike, I ordered it from Walmart because it was significantly cheaper. However, now they are priced the same. Although the exterior package had a few small holes in it from shipping, the bike came in excellent condition. Although some customers complained about height adjustability, I did not have a problem at all. At only 5′ with short legs, the bike is a perfect fit. With an amply cushioned seat, it is comfortable. There is even a lumbar support. I have five herniated and ruptured discs in my bike and arthritis in both knees, yet it doesn’t bother me to work out on. Other than the assembly, I love everything about this bike! It is unbelievably quiet; you can’t even hear the pedals rotating. You won’t have to worry about any missing parts with this one. All the parts, even the screws and washers come clearly labeled and plastic-wrapped packaging. For this price, I guarantee you can’t find a better recumbent bike!
I originally thought this was a good exercise machine and enjoyed it very much–however, after less than 150 hours of use, the flywheel bearings are going out. I tried to order just bearings, but was told I must order the whole flywheel assembly at a cost of $81+. My experience with other similar bikes is that if the bearings fail once, the replacements will fail after a short time as well.For a piece of equipment that is supposed to retail at $600, this is a piece of junk. I guess that is what I will do with it–haul it to the junk yard.
I was hesitant to purchase this bike because so many people buy excersise equipment, cancel their gym membership and never use the product. I have used this bike often, it was easy to assemble (So I hear, my boyfriend did this for me) it is very quite and there is great resistence. I find that it is as sturdy and comfortbale as the very expensive models in my gym. This also takes less room then a big bulky treadmill, it is sleek looking and takes up hardly any space, I have it in a corner looking out into my yard. By adjusting the tension you can get a really good hard work out of you want to. I am very happy with my purchase.
There is another model that is a little less with out the computer board and monitors but I find the results of calories burned etc to be very helpful and inspirational.
