I have been looking for adjustable weights and they are either cheaply made or way too expensive. I think these are a good balance between price and functionality. There was no way I was spending $400 on the Bowflex ones, and when I tried the Reebok ones at Target, they were tres cheap (not sturdy enough)! It is a little fidgety to get used to how they work, but it only takes a few tries to get it down. I like the color coding of the weight increments, makes it easier when you’re trying to shift from one exercise to the next. I use them with a series of videos (Chalean Extreme) which are constantly changing weights between exercises, and I found them very manageable. Also, I like how compact they are to store and to use. The Bowflex ones look so ungainly when you’re using lower weights. I think this is a great product, and I highly recommend it!!
My friend got the 50 pound Powerblocks and recommended I try the 24 pound ones. I’ve had my PowerBlocks for a couple of weeks and use them with the P90X program. I love them.
They are super easy to adjust, and the set-up time for lifting weights went down exponentially. Instead of having to move multiple sets of weights, I just have to move one set! Also, if I find I chose the wrong weight (too heavy, too light), they are quickly adjusted. The 3 pound increments are convienent too.
My only complaint is that I am not flexible (wrist doesn’t been like it should) and sometimes my wrist hits the side bars on supination curls. Other than that, I don’t even notice the side bars.
I highly recommend the PowerBlocks!
The weight range on these is perfect for me. It is easy to change the weight and not too bulky.
I’ve noticed a few people mention that these can be expanded at a later date if needed, but the Sportsblock 2.4 is probably the only Powerblock set that cannot be upgraded with extra weights.
If you’re like me and are using this for a training program like P90x, go with a bigger set that goes up to 50lbs instead of trying to save yourself some cash upfront. Re-selling these and buying a heavier set isn’t cheaper in the long run.
I’ve also had the same problem with the pin slipping out during use, particularly with the lighter weights. It’s a little concerning and I tend to find myself worrying about whether the pin is going to slip out rather than concentrating on the exercise.
My suggestion would be to go with a heavier set (or double check with the manufacturer that whatever you get can be expanded) and to make sure it has a secure fastening system. It might take you a little longer to change the weight, but you’ll be thankful in the long run.
When I saw these weights on the internet, I was really turned off by the “square” shape. I tried to find them in local stores to see if they were really that ugly in person, but couldn’t find any. However, just as I was set to purchase from a different manufacturer which offers a traditional barbell look, one review on the PowerBlock changed my mind. It was a review by a woman stating that the PowerBlock’s handle grip was very comfortable for a woman’s hand, whereas as the handle on the other set I was considering buying is fatter in the middle, making it harder for smaller hands to get a good grip. Anyway, went with the PowerBlocks in spite of the square shape and am totally in love with them now. They fit my hand perfectly and take up less space than the two pairs of dumbbells that I had been using previously (a 3lb. set and a 5 lb. set). And it is really, really easy to switch the amount of weight with the pin setup, which is very similar to the way you change weight on a weight machine at the gym. I would definitely recommend these…
