I’m on the verge of purchasing a Concept2 rower but haven’t yet. I figured I’d throw my two cents into the mix anyway. I was first introduced to the Concept2 rower when I was attached to a U.S. Navy SEAL team on the west coast. My Task Unit had two of them and we’d do team PT competitions on them. As much as I HATED PT (I’m a bit of a lazy sod) I LOVED rowing! My “teammates” (in quotes because I was never a SEAL, I just worked with them) had nothing but good to say about the rowers, and if a SEAL Senior Chief says it’s a great workout you can take that to the bank.

Also, the C2 rowers are hardy pieces of equipment. We took ours on deployment and carried it in and out of the CONEX box every time we used it and even with 20 people using for that deployment and the wear and tear of moving it around it never gave us problems…heck, the batteries didn’t even die in the monitor (I don’t know if the machine will charge them or what but they never got weak). Anyway, now that I’m out of the service I realize that, as one reviewer previously stated, I find myself just using the C2 rower and the elliptical at the gym. No weights because I have my own bench and olympic set at home. I recently became the proud owner of my very own elliptical machine so now I’m paying 1000 bucks a year for a gym membership just to row…well, I guess it’s time to put up that $1000 and just buy a rower, then I’ll never have to leave the house….except for work…lol

I had used the concept 2 rowing machine at various health clubs before and always felt that it was a top of the line rowing machine. I just bought this for my home use and the product has not disappointed me.

For about the past year I have been spending three or four sessions a week using the Concept2 rower at Gold’s Gym in Fredericksburg.

The Concept2 Rower has been, in the history of me, the best cardio machine consistently used at the gym, and quite possibly the best cardio exercise I have experienced. It’s the only non-impact exercise machine that I have used which has successfully eliminated chub around my core and simultaneously built core strength. While using this machine I have for the first time lost weight and not gained it back, with no noticeable change in my eating patterns. It seems that with other machines my metabolism seems to “plateau,” and then I begin to gain back weight that I initially lost. But with the Concept2 my body has responded positively, and I am keeping off the weight even after a year of steady training.

As we age, core strength is very important for mitigating the opportunity for back and other injuries associated with (usually) our weakest set of muscles. Also, repetitive-impact cardiovascular exercise becomes a dangerous practice as our joints and bones age. Concept2 is an excellent replacement for more typical and “tough-on-the-bones” cardio, as there is no impact and all the challenge of an intense cardio experience. You can build physical and cardio strength on this machine without pulling, pushing, cracking, or hurting yourself on hard pavement.

The movement and flow of the machine feels natural and almost meditative, and when I “push” myself I would give it an equal-or-better cardio experience to cross country running or running on tarmac. You will get all of the “windedness” and rewards of pushing yourself hard without the ice on your knees after a long run.

Finally, if you are a serious cardio athlete then training metrics are extremely important. Concept2 has an amazing amount of support here. Almost every machine on the market or in the gyms now has an integrated PM2 or PM3 performance monitor. Here you track your meters, calories, wattage output, and general performance on a tiny computer. You can even use a chip to take this data and upload your performance to your computer or Concept2’s online database. This PM system enables you, with your metrics, to compete with people in your age group all over the world for time and distance records. And if you want to compete “in the flesh” there are competitions staged globally for indoor rowing that feature only Concept2 machines.

In short if you’re interested in Concept2, go to their website [...]. There is wealth of information there to include competition dates, training suggestions, machine data, and just about anything you can think of regarding the Concept2 machine. Just so everyone knows, I don’t have one of these machines, I’m not endorsed by the company, and have received nothing for writing this article. I’m just a big fan!

About 15yrs ago I worked for a company that provided employees with a small fitness room, it was here that I became acquainted with the Concept 2 rower (model B). I used it daily for almost a year, and it was the best cardio workout I’ve ever had; I would add that prior to this I had spent many years running, and had even completed a marathon and a couple of half-marathons.

About 6 yrs ago, after lifting weights/light running for several years I wanted to get more serious with my cardio workouts. At a higher body weight, increasing my running hours seemed impractical. I remembered the Concept 2 from years ago, and found a used model C that I purchased. I used the model C for over 4 years and logged about 8-9 million meters on it.

Recently, I decided to upgrade to the model D and have been using the model D for about 3 months now. I like the model D, the PM3 monitor, and the extra little touches Concept 2 has added to improve their product. Regardless of which model you choose, the workouts are very consistent in terms of effort/intensity; the Concept 2 rower provides simply the best cardio workout available.

You might also notice that if you go to a gym that offers Concept 2 rowers, the rower you see in the gym is the same one that is sold for home use. This rower is durable enough to be subjected to everyday use in a busy gym.

I just passed the 10 million meter mark today, and in a couple of days I will have logged 3.65 million meters for the 2010 rowing season (Concept 2 provides an online rowing logbook / clubs / forums; with a rowing season that runs from May 1st to April 30th every year). If you are looking for the best cardio workout there is, get a Concept 2 rower… Concept 2 rowers are the training standard amongst competitive rowers of every caliber, and I was never a rower in high school or college, this is just a little tidbit I’ve picked up from using the using the Concept 2 over the years. Surprisingly, despite all the rowing I’ve done on the Concept 2, I’ve never rowed on the water… but I’d sure like to try.

Like most people I read many reviews both good and bad prior to purchase. The product arrived in 3 days. Assembly was effortless. Total assembly lasted 20-30 minutes. The rower is easy to use and the monitor allows a just row funtion. The pull handle and chain provide a smooth and quiet row. For those who are bored easily, try music or watch a movie and time will fly. My only complaint is the foot rests should be pernament attached. Overall this rowing machine is worth the money
